We Should Have Never Walked On The Moon: A Preview of Rambert x (LA)HORDE’s Immersive Takeover at the Southbank Centre

This September, two of the most progressive forces in contemporary dance—Rambert and (LA)HORDE / Ballet national de Marseille—will transform London’s Southbank Centre into a living, moving installation.

Their collaboration, We Should Have Never Walked On The Moon, is not a traditional stage show. It’s an experience; part performance, part exploration, part cultural shift. And it’s coming soon!

From 3–6 September 2025, the Royal Festival Hall and wider Southbank Centre site will become a multi-sensory space for audiences to roam, discover and inhabit. With 50 performers, DJs, cinematic installations, and unexpected performance spaces—backstage corridors, undercrofts, terraces—this project is about unlocking new ways of seeing, moving, and witnessing.

The title, borrowed from a quote attributed to Gene Kelly, points to a world where monumental gestures are reconsidered. Here, movement takes centre stage—not to impress, but to ask questions.

What does it mean to move in an age of hyperconnection?

What is the role of the body when everything is archived, tagged, watched?

What can dance tell us about now?

Co-created by Benoit Swan Pouffer (Artistic Director, Rambert) and (LA)HORDE, the project brings together dancers from both companies, along with Rambert School students and early collaborators from (LA)HORDE’s bold beginnings. The choreography includes works by Lucinda Childs, Oona Doherty, and others who continue to shape the language of movement today.

Rather than positioning the audience in front of the work, We Should Have Never Walked On The Moon places them inside it. You’re invited to wander, to follow your instincts, to linger where the energy pulls you. It's a world in motion—fluid, fragmented and full of presence.

As Aaron Wright, Head of Performance & Dance at the Southbank Centre, puts it: “This isn’t just dance. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration that invites audiences to totally rethink what dance can be.”

Whether you’re dance obsessed or simply curious about shifts in culture - this is a moment to show up for.
